I found your website very informative but now I'm confused about what's the best knee brace for a recreational snow skier. I do not play contact sports.

I blew out my left ACL (no reconstruction) and have been using a brace since the 1980s. One of the elastic straps broke on my old brace so I'm trying to decide whether to fix my brace or get a new one.

I'd like something economical, comfortable and lightweight. I want a brace that prevents hyperextension and provides side to side support. I prefer adjustable straps rather than sleeve type brace. I'd also like to stay in the $200 price range.

What knee brace do you suggest and why?

You may want to take a look at the DonJoy Playmaker Knee Brace. The Playmaker is a very popular brace for athletes that do not need contact protection.

My only concern is that the knee brace will not protect against contact damage. Only a rigid brace will address that for you while still providing support.

Take a look at the DonJoy Armor Knee Brace – Ski Version for example. A rigid knee brace like this will provide more protection for activities like skiing.

I've had total knee replacement on both knees,I don't ski bumps or jumps just the groomers and powder . To help prevent a lateral blowout of my knee what brace would you suggest.

For skiing the DonJoy Armor would be a great choice for you. It will fit nicely with your boots and is rigid for all levels of skiing and other activities.

I'm confused about the difference between the DonJoy Short Armor and the DonJoy Ski Armor braces. Is the only difference the presence of the medial ski deflectors on the Ski Armor brace?

I'm also confused about the need for deflectors ONLY when you're skiing with two braces. When you're skiing, there will be snow pants over the braces, thus preventing them from "tangling". The only exception would be if you are racing and wearing a racing suit. Or, I suppose, late-April skiing for people immune to cold who might not want to wear snowpants then (I do!).

But if you're wearing two non-ski braces for other sports that also use the forcepoint hinge (and thus are presumably subject to the same level of tangling), wouldn't you also want deflectors on the hinges to prevent said tangling? Especially since it may tangle with your knee, never mind the other brace/hinge?

Please. some clarification would be most appreciated.

Hello Laura,

The only distinguishing feature that separates the DonJoy Armor Knee Brace with Standard Hinge and the DonJoy Armor Knee Brace – Ski Version is the Medial Ski Deflectors.

The hinges on the DonJoy Armor Knee Brace with Standard Hinge is a low profile hinge, however if you'd like the deflectors without having to sacrifice the length of the brace, I'd recommend the DonJoy Armor Knee Brace with FourcePoint Hinge, as the hinge on the brace features deflectors as well.

I have been looking at the DonJoy Full Force Ligament Knee brace. Does it come in a ski version or is it the Armor Knee brace the only one that comes in ski version?
Question by: Bill on Jan 19, 2011, 5:50 PM
Hello Bill,

The only change from a Standard Armor and the SKI Armor is that the SKI features a Medial Ski Deflector along the medial or inner hinged of the knee brace. This deflector prevents the medial (inner) hinge from “hooking up” with another brace. Not very necessary unless you're wearing braces on each leg.

You can order a DonJoy FullForce and simply select short calf in your options to achieve the same shorter brace length of the Armor SKI.

I tore my meniscus (grade 2) and sprained my MCL and ACL (also grade 2) skiing this January. I haven't had surgery but my physio has said that it is essential I wear a hinged knee brace when I go skiing again. Do you think that the Armour Knee Brace is the right brace for me? The other issue I have is that the pants I like to wear are tight form-fitted ski pants so I need a brace to go over the top of my pants. Is it going to be possible with this brace? Thanks.

I would reccomend the Armor with Fourcepoint Hinges for your condition and activity level.

Dear Customer Service,

I would like to purchase the DonJoy ACL knee brace but, I live overseas. I have a friend staying in Miami, Florida and she will be able to bring it but, she is asking me if I know how long the Knee brace is and the circunference or width of it. Is it too big to put it in a suitcase ? I'm 1.75cms tall, female and weight 62 kilos. I haven't taken the measurements yet but I guess it might be a medium/large size. I would like to use it for skiing . I had cut my ACL ligaments (all of them) I can ski but, at some point my knee is displaced and would like to control it with the knee brace.

Do you have any recommendations for me ?

I would really appreciate your help.

Thank you in advance

Florencia

I have torn my MCL once and sprained it twice and also fractured my growth plate in my knee. I am a big skier and I need a new brace. My old DonJoy is too small for me. What would be the best knee brace for skiing and also other sports like tennis, mountain running, and contact sports?
Question by: Kelly on Dec 27, 2011, 5:05 PM
The DonJoy Armor would be a great option for you. It will help protect that MCL as well as all of your other ligaments. I would recommend going with this brace.

On sizing, my knee is 16" which would be a large, however my thigh and calf are 18" and 16" respectively, which would indicate a medium. Is it best to size for the larger knee and then adjust the thigh and calf smaller?
Question by: Rick Fellows on Jan 11, 2013, 11:05 AM
Hello, Rick -

You would want to go for the Large. The brace is malleable so you can bend the ends in, should there be too much room in the thigh and calf portion, but you want to accommodate to the knee so that it fits appropriately.

Thank you and have a wonderful day!

I have a legend knee brace I received in 2002 or so and it is a medium. I am considering purchasing an armor ski version brace to replace the legend since I took up skiing again. My measurements are 21.5-15-16. From the chart it fits the top end of medium and the low range of large. Which size would be best? The medium legend fits ok except that it needs replacement parts and is wearing out.
Question by: Phil on Jan 20, 2013, 5:52 PM
Hello, Phil -

We recommend you go with the large as you fall within those appropriate parameters.

Thank you and have a wonderful day!
