Most people know that wearing the appropriate knee brace for your injury is a critical part of choosing the right knee brace. Did you also know that to maximize the protection you get from a knee brace, that selecting the correct size is equally as important as choosing the type of knee brace? A knee brace that fits properly also protects efficiently. Otherwise the brace may be too loose, apply pressure on the wrong areas, or be extremely uncomfortable over time.
What size your leg needs is determined by a number of factors. Here are the 4 most important:
- How big your leg is around the thigh and around the calf (the circumference of your leg)
- The length of thigh and the length of your calf
- The type of knee brace and how it needs to fit on your leg
- How comfortable is the knee brace
Many average-sized adult fit in size large knee braces. It is important that your knee brace fits properly. A knee brace that fits your knee well will not slide down. If it slides, it may mean that the brace is too large. It should also not impede your range of motion. If it does, you may need a smaller brace.
